Spring cleaning is a generic idea everywhere except the South, where it is a genuine necessity. Arkansas pollen coats everything for weeks, it comes indoors on people and pets, and it settles into the exact places a weekly clean does not reach.

Start with the air
This is the step that changes how the whole house feels, and it is the one most people skip.
- Replace HVAC filters. During pollen season they load up far faster than the box says. Check monthly through spring.
- Clean vents and returns. Pull the covers, wash them, vacuum inside the opening. Returns are usually worse than supplies.
- Wipe ceiling fan blades before you run them — otherwise the first warm day redistributes a winter of dust across the room.
Windows, sills and tracks
Pollen collects in window tracks and turns to yellow paste the first time it rains. Vacuum the tracks first, then wipe. Doing it in the other order makes a mess you will fight for twenty minutes.
- Vacuum tracks, then wipe
- Wash sills and frames
- Interior glass
- Wash or dust blinds slat by slat
- Screens, if you can get to them — they hold a surprising amount
Entryways take the worst of it
Everything that comes inside comes through here.
- Wash or replace door mats, inside and out
- Wipe the door, frame and handle
- Clean the floor right to the edges and corners
- Vacuum any entry rug thoroughly on both sides
Room by room
Kitchen
- Inside the refrigerator, shelves out
- Inside the oven
- Range hood filter — degrease it
- Cabinet fronts and the tops of cabinets
- Pull out what moves and clean underneath
Bathrooms
- Grout scrubbed, not just mopped
- Shower head descaled
- Exhaust fan cover washed
- Under-sink cleared and wiped
Bedrooms and living areas
- Wash or air all bedding, including mattress protectors
- Vacuum upholstery, including under the cushions
- Baseboards by hand
- Move furniture and vacuum behind it
- Wipe light fixtures and lamp shades
Do it twice a year
Spring is the obvious one. The second is after the fall, when leaves, dust and everything else come inside for the winter. Two proper resets a year, with regular cleaning in between, keeps a house genuinely ahead instead of slowly losing ground.
This list is a full weekend for most people — and the vents, blinds and grout alone can take a day.
